I got this item for Christmas today. I've not yet had the time to review life of this product but at the time it works wonders. My laptop was getting hot to the touch, especially with the length of time I'd use it. But now it's cool and the fan hasn't had to kick in once, (before it never would shut off).
I don't know what people has said about it being loud. You can hear it sure but it's perfectly quite. Not much louder then the laptop's fan, if at all.
The cord is a bit long, in my opinion, seeing as my USB port is right above the plug.
The rubber feet on the desk side and the laptop side keeps my computer in place better then the laptop's rubber feet.
If this thing were to die I'd probably buy another since it's not expensive but works nice.

I thought this might as well have a followup. It's been a few months now that I've had this fan. I've used it for a number of hours every day. After excessive use the chord does start getting loose. The plug from where the chord connects to the fan is a bit loose so it is easy to knock out but just tap the wire and it's usually enough to get it to work again.
Unfortunately it's no longer powerful enough to keep my laptop cool. The fan kicks in all the time again, but it still helps keep the computer in a safer operating area and I don't use my laptop without it. I'll probably buy another soon, since it's cheap but lasts a good few months, and not even the best fans can go for long without dieing. So... if you're looking for an acceptable to good fan, I'd say just go with this. It's not perfect by any stretch but it's worth the money.
