For the past few years, I have made it a habit to have a "cooling wedge" at work for my laptop or notebook computer. My wife's company deals with a large number of computer repair problems, and according to her staff, poor electricity and heat are the two big killers of computers. I have found it prudent to have a cooling wedge; but now with this new model from Thermaltake, there is a better product available.

First of all, there is more than one possible angle, and this speaks to the ergonomic advantages that are available. My previous wedge had basically one angle, and I guess I simply got accustom to that particular angle. There seem to be five different angles available here, and for anyone with carpal tunnel concerns, this must be a Godsend.

The unit has some safety features built-in now. There are rubber friction points that keep the computer from sliding around anyway, but there are as well two stops that would keep a laptop from sliding forwards. To be truthful, I did not have a problem with the older unit from Thermaltake, but then again, I guess the designers wanted to be safe than sorry.

What has not changed is the size of the fan. This large fan is able to move a lot of air around your laptop or notebook computer, and this I think is very important. But, what has changed is that the unit has a variable speed option now. I am not sure why people don't simply leave it running full out - at 800 rpm, but perhaps there might be some additional noise at certain specific rotational speeds. You can dial down the speed to approximately 500 rpm. There must be a sweet spot in there for everyone.

Talking about the noise of the fan though, I must confess that I don't hear it at all. The background noise at my office is keeping me from hearing anything from the cooling wedge, but perhaps late a night, with no other noises in the house, this fan noise might be an option. The unit is geared out at 24 dBA as a maximum, and that really is not a lot of noise.

I am glad to see that there are more USB ports - both two regular ones and a small mini-USB port. This is a wonderful feature.

All in all, it has taken the absolute need people have for keeping their computers running for well beyond their warranty periods, and have added some very good and necessary features.

While the unit has a fair degree of plastic on it, this is the only downside to this unit. If it had more metal on it, it would make me feel a bit better; but then again, it is only $ 35-ish !!!
