Less than a year after we got our HP Compaq CQ61-420US, I noticed that the fan was starting to make noise intermittently. I never did anything about it, and it finally got so bad that the CPU temp was almost hitting 90 deg C. I did a lot of looking, and it was hard to find much info about replacing this fan. HP says it is not serviceable, so you should send it in for repair. I'm sure this would be very expensive, so I wanted to do it myself. Most of what I could find on ebay etc was the fan assembly attached to the heat sink for $50 or so. There were lots of inexpensive fans available, like this one listed on Amazon, but they said they were for the CQ61-100 series. Well, I decided to dig in and take the laptop apart to get at the fan. You do have to go as far as removing the motherboard from the laptop, which I have never done before, but I went ahead anyway. It really wasn't that bad to get it apart. There is an extra screw under the keyboard holding the bezel down, so take the keyboard out before you try to rip out the bezel. And the cable for the keyboard is held down by a black latch that flips up in order to release the flat cable. I messed up here and broke that tab, but was able to glue it back together.

After I got it all apart, I did find that the fan does come off of the heat-sink assembly with 4 tiny screws. You will definitely need a nice tiny screw driver set for this repair - amazon sells a nice Stanley set for $6 (search for B00009OYGV). Once I got the fan off, I did some more searching using the part number off of the fan. I finally found a site or two that did say that this fan will fit in the CQ61-420US model, as well as a lot of others. I took a chance and ordered it from Amazon, and it turned out beautifully. The fan bolted right in, and then all I had to do was remember how to get it all back together. All went very smoothly, and now my laptop is running nice and quiet again, and there is a good breeze coming out of the fan vent. I checked my CPU Temps after running Super PI for 6 minutes or so, and the hottest it got was 45-46 deg C.

I'm sure this fan failure has happened to a lot of other folks, and I just wanted to get some info out there so maybe others can fix this problem on their own. Just take it nice and slow, separate out the screws depending on where they came from, and if they had any symbols next to them (arrow, keyboard, etc), and take extra time when it comes to removing any of the cable connectors. For under $20, I got my laptop running like new again. Of course, I will probably have to do this again in a year or two.
