To be honest, the fan is quiet most of the time. The problem is that (unlike other fan bases I have used), this base doesn't have an outer shell. It's a solid piece of plastic with the fans inset. That means things can touch the fan blades and cause noise. Even with the rubberized feet (top and bottom), the laptop can slide on the base...or the base can slide on the lap desk. Either one can cause sudden bursts of noise that will interrupt your flow of work. Also, if you tend to toss pens or other objects on the lap desk, they can slide under the fan base and catch the blades that way, or if you set the laptop aside without the lap desk, you can catch things under it on the table. While the noise is bothersome, I'm more worried that I'm going to break the blades accidentally this way. In the future, I think I'm going to go back to an enclosed fan base, even though that makes it harder to clean effectively.
Other than that concern, the fan base is gorgeous. It's lightweight, lighted with LEDs, and a very pretty product that can be carried along with you without adding weight. I'm not sorry I purchased it, problems and all.
