I use this with my 17" MacBook Pro on a daily basis. The pad does get warm, especially after using it all day long sometimes, but never hot - and NEVER as hot as the laptop without the pad. Even after having used it tonight for the past 3 hours straight, both the pad AND the laptop are "warm" but not "hot". I chose this color because it blends well with the aluminum case. Whether you're looking for a pad to use on your lap or to protect another surface from heat, this is definitely a good choice. I had previously bought a pink one for my wife's 15" MacBook Pro - don't even try to take it away from her (the heatshift pad OR the laptop). ;-)

Edit 2-24-2013: Still using this almost 2 years later, not changing my rating. After reading some of the other comments, wanted to add that the crystals do not get cool themselves - nor is there any statement that they will, nor is it reasonable to expect they will. Their purpose is to draw heat away from the device, which they do well. I can see where this isn't a good fit for laptops with a cooling fan in the bottom, but it should be expected that placing such a laptop on any such relatively flat surface should be expected to block the cooling fan (and also consider such cooling fans to be "design flaws" anyway; using "common sense", they should be side and/or rear vented).
