After searching long endless hours on amazon for notebook coolers, i finally decided to go for the tarsus chill mat jr.
I've looked at literally EVERY cooler/lapdesk available on amazon and some were either too pricey, didn't fit what i wanted or were cheap quality. heres what i wanted for my macbook air:
-lap friendly! the reason why i wanted something was to be able to use my laptop on my lap, bed, etc. without having to worry about it overheating!
-it had to fit the budget
-it didn't HAVE to have a fan, but it did have to aid in proper ventilation to keep my laptop from running too warm
-it had to be something that would last, and didn't look like a cheap piece of plastic
i looked at the lapinator, the cool master u2 and u3, the xpad, the cool lift, several belkin products, several logitech products, thermal pads....and i think you get the idea. Oh! and i even bought the antic usb cooler and ended up returning it because it made my laptop running hotter with the cooler on! some coolers were just not durable, some just looked like a piece of flimsy plastic (which i refuse to pay for), some didn't really assist in proper ventilation, some weren't lap friendly and some were great but just too expensive!
i found this cooler at staples for $14.99! i got it shipped to my local staples store for free and picked it up! i couldn't ask for a better deal! i was reluctant on spending $30 because of my stringent ways, but when i found it for 15 bucks, i had to buy it! and I'm loving it!
PROS:
-you can use it on your lap! many laptop coolers that use fans are hard to use on your lap/bed. by using it on ur bed or lap, you can cover the fan, which reduces effectiveness. the targus chill mat's wedge design allows you to put it anywhere u choose without covering up the fan!
-nice neoprene bottom. many other lap desks were either just too hard or had a bean bag like substance which don't really help.
-gives my laptop a nice ergonomic tilt
-solidly constructed, aesthetically pleasing
-keeps my macbook air nice and cool
CONS
-the rubber feet don't do too well of a job at keeping my laptop from sliding around at an inclined level. i wish there could be a lip or something to make it more secure!
i wanted to provide some temperature readings after using the chill mat**
before using the chill mat, my macbook would run at around 55-63 degrees C (130-145 degrees F)
with the chill mat without the fan my macbook rarely reaches 60, it does get there sometimes though. it runs around 38-63C (100-145 degrees F). it usually stays in the mid 50C.
with the fan on, the temp readings are around the same, but do go down a couple degrees
**these readings are when i run flash content on my mac, which use about 30-45% of the CPU.
